OUR IDEA

The project that the Shad Valley Laval team has brought forth is an NGO by the name of OIFS (Organization for Inuit Food Security). Since a major contributing factor to obesity in Inuit communities is the lack of food security, Shad Valley Laval came up with this brilliant idea to address the problem.

OIFS plans to introduce a solution by providing the Inuit people with healthy and fresh fruits and vegetables using the magic of hydroponics in the style of co-operatives;

Members can buy shares from the co-op to obtain fresh produce at a cheap price, and we can even turn our competitors into partners by offering local grocery stores the chance to buy shares.

The members of the community will be able to purchase the fresh produce directly from the greenhouse, rather than from a grocery store or market place. Thus, the Inuit people will be able to save their children from the epidemic of childhood obesity, while saving their wallets from over priced organic food.

The idea is to build hydroponic green houses in order to grow food that would otherwise be unavailable in the cold and infertile Inuit territories.

These greenhouses will be designed specifically to be suited to arctic climates by using a dome shape design and incorporating a woven poly as the building material, and the produce will be grown through the use of uniquely designed hydroponic systems. We hope to introduce this system to change the eating habits of families to stop youth obesity at its root, and we also hope to introduce our community gardens to schools and establish health awareness programs at local schools to implement and solidify change.

It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. Donating to OIFS brings Canada one step closer to solving this problem and helps raise the Inuit children on a healthy diet!
